One might ask why I became an adventurer as opposed to signing up with the Rytlish military, much like my father before me. And while it is true that I have a large amount of respect for our soldiers, I did not choose to join them as I left school and home for a few reasons. Firstly, I was not ready to sign my life over yet after just having my life on my own begun. The risk of sudden, unpredictable death was too high, and I was not ready to surrender myself to that so soon. But that, however, may have been a moot point because of the second reason: Rytland was just coming out of a war, and not going into one. Although many were lost in the battles of the Zahndir war, and there is still tension between the countries, the fighting was over. Regav had been annexed, and the need the military has for fresh recruits was low. There may be call for more royal guard, as the King still remains in Castle City… But from a few quest letters I have seen recently, the Royal Crown is relying on adventurers from the Guild at an increasing rate. An interesting change.
That leads to the question of why I chose the life of an adventurer. I suppose, despite the fact that I have to fulfill specific tasks, there’s a great sense of freedom that comes from this work. I do get to choose which missions to take on, for example. I get to travel this beautiful country, and see what there is to see. But also, within the guild, there’s so much room to grow even more. I won’t necessarily be working the same task, day in and day out, every day until I die. I can grow and take on quests of legendary proportions, if I can reach that level one day!
Back in school, I heard about the exploits of a large band of adventurers called the Valhalla Clan. Very inspirational stuff. They’ve been operating for years, gradually taking on more and more difficult tasks that most shy away from. I heard they really crossed over into they higher ranks of the guild after finishing a month-long venture that started as a rescue mission in a cave-in, that became a quest to reach and map out the darkest depths of an underground ruin that was teeming with monsters. They subsequently help with the extermination of said monsters, of course. Their leader is not that much older than I am, but from the stories I heard, he is exceptionally capable in many ways. He’s an amazing swordsman and also a spell-caster, able to weave both into a unique fighting style. His leadership is evident by the massive clan that he heads. He’s basically at the legendary level that I have just mentioned. I wonder if I could meet him one day. I wonder if I could reach that level.
